We Are Kindred Kids

A community-based nonprofit on a mission to put free books and meaningful literacy experiences into the hands of every child in Oakland and Wayne County, Michigan.

Our Story: How Kindred Kids Began

Kindred Kids Literacy Project was not born in a boardroom. It was born in a quiet moment between a mother and her son — with a book between them and a whole world waiting to be discovered. Our founder Ashlyn Bryant began reading to her son at six months old. At two years old he was diagnosed with autism and was nonverbal. In those early days books were the one constant — the one place they could always meet each other, no matter what. Through consistent daily reading her son fell in love with books. He began to light up when a page turned. He began to reach for stories on his own.Reading helped him find his voice. That experience changed everything for Ashlyn. She looked around at her community and saw families who wanted exactly what she had found — access to books, guidance on how to read with their children, and someone in their corner who believed that literacy was not a luxury. It was a lifeline.Kindred Kids Literacy Project was founded in March 2026 with one simple and unshakeable belief — that every child, regardless of their zip code, their family's income, or how they learn, deserves access to books and someone who believes in them.
